Course Information
Description	Intensive study of and practice in writing processes, from invention and researching to drafting, revising, and editing, both individually and collaboratively. Emphasis on effective rhetorical choices, including audience, purpose, arrangement, and style. Focus on writing the academic essay as a vehicle for learning, communicating, and critical analysis.
Prerequisites	None
Learning Outcomes	Upon successful completion of this course, students will: Demonstrate knowledge of individual and collaborative writing processes. Develop ideas with appropriate support and attribution. Write in a style appropriate to audience and purpose. Read, reflect, and respond critically to a variety of texts. Use Edited American English in academic essays.
Core Objectives	* Communication skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and visual communication. * Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions. * Teamwork: Students will demonstrate the ability to work effectively with others to support a shared purpose or goal and consider different points of view. * Personal Responsibility: Students will demonstrate the ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical decision-making.

Course Policies
Instructor Policies	I will be grading your essays using a ten category 1301 Essay Grading Rubric, which I will provide for you at the beginning of the semester. I will be posting your grades on Blackboard for you to access at any point throughout the semester. If you would like to meet with me about your grade, then you will need to schedule an appointment with me. All of the writing in this class must be written by the student enrolled in the class without any outside help. ***Plagiarism policy will be discussed in in further detail; first offense will result in a 0 for the assignment, and the second offense will result in failing the class.*** Ignorance is not a defense. The Plagiarism Contract will be read in class and signed by each student who verifies he/she understands exactly what plagiarism is and the consequences if it is committed. Plagiarism is a serious offense and will be dealt with as such. ***Communication is key! I receive emails directly to my phone, and I am quick to respond. If you have any comments, questions, or concerns at any point in the semester, please feel free to reach out to me. There is no need for you to go through the semester with any unanswered questions or unaddressed issues. I am here to assist you in any way that I can, and I want everyone to get the most out of their online experience this semester!
Attendance Policy	Research has shown a cause and effect relationship between attendance and college success. Students with more than three unexcused absences will receive an academic penalty in the form of a grade reduction. Excessive tardiness will, likewise, have an effect on your grade.
Academic Honesty	Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.
Facility Policies	No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
